July 11th / On the 4th and 5th of July everyone in Year 8 took part in a Geography trip to London and a Classics trip to investigate life in Roman Verulamium. Emily Miller of 8S has written the following report of her experiences on these trips.
We split into two groups, one with three forms and the other with two. The first trip my group went on was the Geography boat trip along the River Thames, which was absolutely amazing and I would recommend to anyone. When we got to London we had lunch at a park in the shade as it was an extremely hot day. We then made our way onto the boat and sat down. After a quick health and safety announcement we made our way down the River Thames. Our Tour guide was very interesting and funny, which made the boat trip a lot more fun.
As we were going down the River Thames we came across many tourist attractions, and we were lucky enough to see Tower Bridge opening to let a boat come through. As the day ended and we all made our way to the coach, everybody looked extremely tired and worn out. Thinking back to that day I think we were extremely lucky with the weather, as if it rained we wouldn’t have been able to see as much as we did.
On the Friday we went to Verulamium which was very interesting and fun. We started the day in the classroom, learning a bit about the things we would be looking at. The teachers also gave us sheets that we had to fill in during the day. After the lesson had finished we made our way to our separate coaches and started our journey to Verulamium. When we got there we walked up a hill to see the remians of a massive mosaic floor.
When we were there we learned alot about the hypocaust underneath the mosaic and how it warmed up the whole house. I found this very interesting. When we had finished looking at the mosaic we went to see the Roman wall that was still standing. We then made our way down to the remains of an old Roman theatre. It was quite hard to tell what it was until someone told me then it was very clear. By this point we were all getting very hungry so we had lunch on a field under a tree as it was getting very hot. After lunch we all went to the museum. I found this part of the day the most fun as we had to choose one thing in the museum that we found interesting and get as much information as we could, then we gave a presentation on it to our whole class. Overall it was a great day and very worthwhile.
