Nov 30th / Last Friday, pupils from Year 11 were visited by Ute Müller and Lucy Myerson, two lawyers from London firms Duane Morris and Boodle Hatfield respectively. Both lawyers spoke to the year group about the importance of foreign languages in business as well as the opportunities that are created in a future career by learning a language. Olivia in 11Y tells us more about their visit:
We were put into teams and tested on our knowledge of the languages of the EU. Many of us were really surprised to discover the extremely low percentage of people in the UK who speak one or more foreign languages in comparison to the rest of the European Union who are much more bi-(or even tri-!)lingual! Moreover, Ute and Lucy introduced us to the 5Cs of language learning: Culture, Cool, Connections, Communication and Competition, and then discussed the advantages of learning German or French as these are the most widely spoken languages in the EU.
We would like to thank Ute and Lucy for giving up their time and coming into school to speak to us and we are grateful for their insightful talk which introduced Year 11 to the benefits of language learning and the variety of prospects it offers us for the future.
