Students in Years 7, 8 & 9 were in for a treat when award winning rap poet and author, Karl Nova, popped into Loreto yesterday.

Here’s 8Y’s Josie Marson to tell you all about it:

On Tuesday we were lucky enough as a school for the CILIP award winning author, rapper and verbal poet Karl Nova to come and do a presentation for years 7, 8 and 9.  Over the course of an hour, Karl shared how he got into poetry circles, his rocky childhood and performed some of his best known poems such as his version of A-Z, Poetry?, and True Colours.  His presentation provided a fantastic and inspiring way to kick start Reading Week at Loreto as Karl, despite saying he was quite shy and introverted, as soon as he stepped onto the stage was a constant source of comic relief and provided many funny impressions, jokes and stories about situations he found himself in. During the presentation he talked about and promoted his new books which everyone will have a chance to buy sometime this week: Rhythm and Poetry and The Curious Case of Karl Nova – both full of his most widely known poems and with a few new ones.

After his presentation, a few lucky students had been chosen by their English teachers to take part in a workshop run by Karl in which he showed all of us how to write poetry that can be performed – and is catchy!  We used alliterative, rhyming and metaphoric techniques to create our own poems that Karl read out (if we wanted) and commented on!  What an amazing opportunity!!!
