On 4th – 5th December 2008, 101 members of Year 9 visited the World War One Battlefields in Belgium. The trip was run jointly by the History and English Departments and combined both work on the history of World War One and poetry written during the war. Pupils visited a variety of sites, including Tyne Cot, the largest British Cemetery with over 12 000 graves, and Langemarck, a German Cemetery. Pupils enjoyed a trench meal and a re-enactment of the Christmas Truce in 1914. Pupils paid their respects to the millions of men who died during World War One by attending the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ypres and laying a wreath on behalf of Loreto College. The trip was both enjoyable and informative, and pupils gained a huge amount from the experience. |
